That cloudless night by the waning light of a tired moon

The poet stole across the town

(Sleeping, always sleeping

And dreaming, never dreaming)

A shadow and a shade

A ghost that just was made

Creeping across the common, past the bridge and past the fountain

He pushed his wheelbarrow forward through the gloom

And rested by the river where

He could see the stone

The shape of it alone

Made him grasp his heart

An artist when his art

Stares back at him, a fount of living inspiration

The stone, he brought it home beneath the secrecy of night

The thief cometh like the Lord

Into his house where it was stored

He crept into the dreams of the townspeople

Like a knife into a vein

Or a rope around a throat

Esa noche sin nubes a la luz menguante de una luna cansada

El poeta se robó a través de la ciudad

(Durmiendo, siempre durmiendo

Y soñando, nunca soñando)

Una sombra y una sombra

Un fantasma que acaba de ser hecho

Arrastrándose por lo común, pasando el puente y pasando la fuente

Empujó su carretilla hacia adelante a través de la penumbra

Y descansó junto al río donde

Podía ver la piedra

La forma de eso solo

Le hizo agarrar su corazón

Un artista cuando su arte

Le devuelve la mirada, una fuente de inspiración viva.

La piedra, la trajo a casa bajo el secreto de la noche

El ladrón viene como el Señor

A su casa donde estaba guardado

Se metió en los sueños de la gente del pueblo

Como un cuchillo en una vena

O una cuerda alrededor de una garganta
