The glories of our blood and state

Are shadows, not substantial things

There is no armour against Fate

Death lays his icy hand on kings:

Sceptre and Crown

Must tumble down

And in the dust be equal made

With the poor crooked scythe and spade

Some men with swords may reap the field

And plant fresh laurels where they kill:

But their strong nerves at last must yield

They tame but one another still:

Early or late

They stoop to fate

And must give up their murmuring breath

When they, pale captives, creep to death

The garlands wither on your brow

Then boast no more your mighty deeds

Upon Death’s purple altar now

See where the victor-victim bleeds

Your heads must come

To the cold tomb:

Only the actions of the just

Smell sweet and blossom in their dust

Las glorias de nuestra sangre y estado

son sombras, no cosas sustanciales

No hay armadura contra el Destino

La muerte pone su mano helada sobre los reyes:

Cetro y Corona

debe derrumbarse

Y en el polvo ser igual hecho

Con la pobre guadaña torcida y la pala

Algunos hombres con espadas pueden segar el campo

y plantar laureles frescos donde matan:

Pero sus fuertes nervios al fin deben ceder

Se domestican, pero el uno al otro todavía:

Temprano o tarde

Se rebajan al destino

Y deben renunciar a su aliento murmurante

Cuando ellos, cautivos pálidos, se arrastran hacia la muerte

Las guirnaldas se marchitan en tu frente

Entonces no te jactes más de tus poderosas obras

Sobre el altar púrpura de la Muerte ahora

Mira dónde sangra el vencedor-víctima

Tus cabezas deben venir

A la tumba fría:

Sólo las acciones de los justos

Huele dulce y florece en su polvo
