Give Up - The Burning Hell

In the stacks of the public library I searched for something I was missing

I went to find number 92 in the Dewey Decimal System

That’s the secret code for biographies of the famous and the infamous

From Amelia E to Alexander the G to Mister Christopher Columbus

But I was not after tales of pilots, kings or genocidal sailors

Rather the story of a strange American author and one-time whaler

Herman M, that’s him, the beardy bard who brought us Moby-Dick

I always liked that book of his and I wanted to learn his trick

Well I discovered Mr. Melville died a destitute romantic

Despite his tales of maritime adventure in the Pacific and Atlantic

He searched his whole lifetime for a symbolic kind of whale of his own

And died with no answers, half-crazy and more or less alone

My fiction ambitions took a hit with that bit of information

I mean everybody has their own symbolic cetacean

But whales are weighty and some become allegorical albatrosses

So I threw away my harpoon and cut my library card and my losses

I gave up!

It was time

I gave up: it’s no crime

I said to myself that what I’ve got is good enough

I gave up, I gave up.

One hot August afternoon I was taking customer calls in my cubicle

Doing my job dealing with disputes that people found disputable

The ringer rang, I picked up and heard a lady on the line

She said meet me in the parking lot downstairs tomorrow at nine

She hung up before I answered, I sat there staring at the phone

There had been something perplexingly persuasive in her tone

And so it was the next morning found me lurking in the lot

She was leaning on a pillar like in a thriller with a predictable plot

Her pantsuit was as black as the feet of an ancient wandering mystic

Her lips looked made of metal, but it was just silver lipstick

Wordlessly she handed me a package wrapped in brown

Her pumps should have clicked as she departed but they didn’t make a sound

Now you’re wondering what was in the package and trust me I was too

It could be poison or bombs or subversive literature for all I knew

But you could measure my pleasure with the very smallest measuring cup

It was a framed poster of a kitten saying «never give up»

So I gave up!

what else could I do

I gave up: so would you

I mean who doesn’t like kittens, but enough is enough

I gave up, I gave up.

So though I know in our culture it basically boils down to blasphemy

I’ve had it with the power of positive thinking and the tyranny of tenacity

I can’t live with this stick-to-it-iveness dependent on endless achievement

I’d rather relax and casually chant a mantra I really believe in:

I give up all of the time

I give up and I’m doing fine

Because I’ve got to be going when the going gets tough

En las pilas de la biblioteca pública busqué algo que me faltaba

Fui a buscar el número 92 en el Sistema Decimal Dewey

Ese es el código secreto para las biografías de los famosos y los infames

De Amelia E a Alejandro G al señor Cristóbal Colón

Pero no iba tras cuentos de pilotos, reyes o marineros genocidas

Más bien la historia de un extraño autor estadounidense y ballenero de una sola vez.

Herman M, ese es él, el bardo barbudo que nos trajo Moby-Dick

Siempre me gustó ese libro suyo y quería aprender su truco.

Bueno, descubrí que el Sr. Melville murió como un romántico indigente

A pesar de sus relatos de aventuras marítimas en el Pacífico y el Atlántico

Buscó durante toda su vida un tipo de ballena simbólica propia

Y murió sin respuestas, medio loco y más o menos solo

Mis ambiciones de ficción se vieron afectadas con ese poco de información.

Quiero decir, todos tienen su propio cetáceo simbólico.

Pero las ballenas pesan y algunas se convierten en albatros alegóricos

Así que tiré mi arpón y corté mi tarjeta de la biblioteca y mis pérdidas

¡Me di por vencido!

Era hora

Me di por vencido: no es un crimen

Me dije a mí mismo que lo que tengo es lo suficientemente bueno

Me rendí, me rendí.

Una calurosa tarde de agosto estaba atendiendo llamadas de clientes en mi cubículo

Hacer mi trabajo lidiando con disputas que las personas encontraron discutibles

Sonó el timbre, descolgué y escuché a una señora en la línea

Dijo que nos encontraríamos en el estacionamiento de abajo mañana a las nueve.

Ella colgó antes de que contestara, me quedé allí sentado mirando el teléfono

Había algo desconcertantemente persuasivo en su tono.

Y así fue a la mañana siguiente que me encontró acechando en el lote

Ella estaba apoyada en un pilar como en un thriller con una trama predecible

Su traje pantalón era tan negro como los pies de un antiguo místico errante.

Sus labios parecían de metal, pero solo era lápiz labial plateado.

Sin decir palabra, me entregó un paquete envuelto en papel marrón.

Sus bombas deberían haber hecho clic cuando se fue, pero no emitieron ningún sonido.

Ahora te preguntas qué había en el paquete y créeme, yo también lo estaba.

Podría ser veneno o bombas o literatura subversiva por lo que sabía

Pero podrías medir mi placer con la taza de medir más pequeña

Era un póster enmarcado de un gatito que decía «nunca te rindas»

¡Así que me rendí!

que mas podria hacer

Me rendí: tú también

Me refiero a que no le gustan los gatitos, pero ya basta.

Me rendí, me rendí.

Entonces, aunque sé que en nuestra cultura, básicamente se reduce a una blasfemia.

Lo he tenido con el poder del pensamiento positivo y la tiranía de la tenacidad

No puedo vivir con esta perseverancia que depende de un logro sin fin

Prefiero relajarme y cantar casualmente un mantra en el que realmente creo:

Me rindo todo el tiempo

Me rindo y estoy bien

Porque tengo que ir cuando las cosas se ponen difíciles
