Anybody seen a knight pass this way

I saw him playing chess with Death yesterday

His crusade was a search for God and they say

It’s been a along way to carry on Anybody hear of plague in this town

The town I’ve left behind was burned to the ground

A young girl on a stake her face framed in flames cried

I’m not a witch God knows my name

The knight he watched with fear

He needed to know

He ran where he might feel God’s breath

And in the misty church

He knelt to confess

The face within the booth was Mr. Death

My life’s a vain pursuit of meaningless smiles

Why can’t God touch me with a sign

Perhaps there’s no one there answered the booth

And Death hid within his cloak and smiled

This morning I played chess with Death said the knight

We played that he might grant me time

My bishop and my knight will shatter his flanks

And still I might feel God’s heart in mine

And through confession’s grille Death’s laughter was heard

The knight cried No you’ve cheated me!

But still I’ll find a way

We’ll meet once again and once again

Continue to play

They met within the woods the knight his squire and friends

And Death said now the game shall end

The final move was made

The knight hung his head

And said you’ve won I’ve nothing left to play

The minstrel filled with visions sang to his love

To look against the stormy sky

The knight his squire and friends

Their hands held as one

Solemnly danced toward the dawn

His hourglass in his hand his scythe by his side

The master Death he leads them on The rain will wash away the tears from their faces

And as the thunder cracked they were gone

Alguien vio a un caballero pasar por aquí

Lo vi jugando al ajedrez con la Muerte ayer.

Su cruzada fue una búsqueda de Dios y dicen

Ha sido un largo camino para continuar. Alguien ha oído hablar de la peste en esta ciudad.

La ciudad que dejé atrás fue quemada hasta los cimientos

Una niña en una estaca con el rostro enmarcado en llamas lloró

El caballero que miraba con miedo

Corrió donde podía sentir el aliento de Dios

Y en la iglesia brumosa

Se arrodilló para confesar

La cara dentro de la cabina era el Sr. Muerte

Mi vida es una vana búsqueda de sonrisas sin sentido

¿Por qué Dios no puede tocarme con una señal

Tal vez no haya nadie allí que responda a la cabina.

Y la Muerte se escondió dentro de su capa y sonrió

Esta mañana jugué al ajedrez con la muerte dijo el caballero

Jugamos a que me conceda tiempo

Mi obispo y mi caballero destrozarán sus flancos

Y aún puedo sentir el corazón de Dios en el mío

Y por la reja de la confesión se escuchó la risa de la muerte

El caballero gritó ¡No, me has engañado!

Pero aún encontraré una manera

Nos encontraremos una y otra vez

seguir jugando

Se encontraron en el bosque el caballero su escudero y amigos

Y la muerte dijo que ahora el juego terminará

El movimiento final se hizo

El caballero agachó la cabeza.

Y dijiste que has ganado, no me queda nada para jugar

El juglar lleno de visiones cantó a su amor

Para mirar contra el cielo tormentoso

El caballero su escudero y amigos

Sus manos sostenidas como una sola

Solemnemente bailó hacia el amanecer

Su reloj de arena en su mano su guadaña a su lado

El maestro Muerte a la que los conduce La lluvia lavará las lágrimas de sus rostros

Y cuando el trueno estalló se habían ido
