When It's My Time - Rodney Atkins

I was late for work, had to pull to the side

While a funeral train of cars drove by with their lights on

It was just my luck, it went on and on for miles

I kept checking my watch, gritting my teeth

Then suddenly it dawned on me that whoever this is

Is going to be missed for a long, long time

It got me thinking

When it’s my time to go, the end of my road I hope it looks like this

200 cars stretched out as far as the hearts I touched while I lived

And I hope I leave half as much love behind when it’s my time

So I followed that last car down to the church

Took off my ball cap, tucked in my shirt

I just had to see what kind of life could cause such as traffic jam

Heard story after story, people laugh, people cry

It didn’t take long to understand why every pew was full

There’s a lot of good souls made better for knowing him

And now I’m one of them

Felt a hand on my back, turned around, someone asked

«Did you know him well?»

And I said, «Yeah, well enough to know»

Llegué tarde al trabajo, tuve que parar a un lado

Mientras pasaba un tren fúnebre de coches con las luces encendidas

Fue solo mi suerte, siguió y siguió durante millas

Seguí mirando mi reloj, apretando los dientes

Entonces, de repente, me di cuenta de que quienquiera que sea

Se va a extrañar por mucho, mucho tiempo

Me hizo pensar

Cuando sea mi hora de irme, el final de mi camino espero que se vea así

200 autos se extendían hasta los corazones que toqué mientras viví

Y espero dejar la mitad de amor atrás cuando sea mi momento

Así que seguí el último auto hasta la iglesia

Me quité la gorra de béisbol, la metí en mi camisa

Solo tenía que ver qué tipo de vida podría causar un atasco de tráfico

Escuché historia tras historia, la gente ríe, la gente llora

No pasó mucho tiempo para entender por qué todos los bancos estaban llenos

Hay muchas almas buenas que se hacen mejores por conocerlo.

Y ahora soy uno de ellos

Sentí una mano en mi espalda, me di la vuelta, alguien preguntó

«¿Lo conocías bien?»

Y yo dije: «Sí, lo suficientemente bien como para saber»
