but he fell in with a bookie

made him an offer he couldn’t refuse

and he screamed and he staggered

he was swinging at the ghosts

he could see everywhere

he cried «I know I could have beat him

Well it’s true he threw the fight

but he was too proud to take the dive

he just leaned against the ropes

and took the punches

'til the blood ran into his eyes

His corner they were screaming

but he couldn’t hear a thing

bottles and chairs went flying through the air

as they pulled him from the ring

he cried «I know I could have beat him
