Whither so swiftly the timid swallow?

What distant bourne seeks her untiring wing?

To reach it safe, what needle does she follow

When darkness wraps the poor wee storm tossed thing?

To build her nest near to my couch

I’ll call her;

Why go so far skies bright and warm to keep;

Safe would she be;

No evil should befall her,

For I’m an exile sad, too sad to weep

My fatherland is dear but I too have left it;

Far am I from the spot where I was born;

Cheerless in life, fierce storms joy bereft it;

Made me an exile life-long and forlorn

Come then to me, sweet feathered pilgrim stranger;

Oh!

let me clasp you to my loving breast

And lest your warbling safe from danger,

Unwanted tears bring relief and rest.

¿Hacia dónde tan veloz la tímida golondrina?

¿Qué bourne distante busca su ala incansable?

Para llegar a salvo, ¿qué aguja sigue?

¿Cuando la oscuridad envuelve a la pobre cosa arrojada por la tormenta?

Para construir su nido cerca de mi sofá

la llamaré;

¿Por qué ir tan lejos cielos brillantes y cálidos para mantener;

A salvo estaría ella;

Ningún mal debe sobrevenirle,

Porque soy un exiliado triste, demasiado triste para llorar

Mi patria es querida pero yo también la he dejado;

Lejos estoy del lugar donde nací;

Sin alegría en la vida, feroces tormentas la despojaron de alegría;

Me hizo un exilio de por vida y abandonado

Ven entonces a mí, dulce extranjero peregrino emplumado;

¡Vaya!

déjame estrecharte contra mi pecho amoroso

y que tu trino esté a salvo del peligro,

Las lágrimas no deseadas traen alivio y descanso.
